Yikes! Nearly a year since my last update, and exactly a year
since my last-but-one! Where did all that time go? What have I
been doing? Well, mostly my spare time's been spent studying
dinosaurs. Unfortunately, due to the slow turning of the wheels,
my publications page is not showing the
fruit of that effort yet - but it will.
Anyway: I updated a lot of my
adventure game
material:
- Added
an area about Nosferatu,
a game that I wrote in 1982 and that I now have running in an
emulator. Includes an emulator image, maps, solution,
cassette scans and more.
- Added a non-trivial version of the
sac area,
describing the the Scott Adams compiler that I made largely
for my eight-year-old son Danny.

and Zzap!64) to my page on
The Causes of Chaos.
Thanks to Jacob Gunness for digging these up.
Wednesday 6th April 2005
Tuesday 22nd March 2005
- Brought
my CV up to date.

Monday 7th June 2004
- Belatedly add a downloadable tarball of the first ever release
of the three-year-old
Scott Adams Compiler
code (because someone asked for it!)
- Add the incomplete but still useful
tutorial
for the Scott Adams Compiler.

pages (thanks to Alec Turner).
Tuesday 3rd June 2003
Wednesday 28th May 2003
Thursday 15th May 2003
Saturday 10th May 2003
- Added the notes for tomorrow morning's sermon on
Keeping God Central
(This document and the last one I added, while they share the
same title, have little other materal in common.)
Thursday 24th April 2003
- Belatedly added my notes on North Central church's
``strategy'', if you want to call it that, of
Keeping God Central.
Monday 17th March 2003
Tuesday 25th February 2003
Friday 31st January 2003
- Add the notes for next Sunday's sermon,
God's Holiness,
from the new ``What God is Like'' series.
Friday 17th January 2003
- Add a piece on some of the options available for
selling stuff on-line.
(This emerges, of course, from my adventures in setting up an
electronic sales channel for Fiona's new CD
Child's Play.)
Tuesday 18th December 2002
- Add more screen-shots to the Causes of Chaos
trivia page.
- A key moment in late-80s Warwick computer science here: I am
delighted to announce, after a thirteen-year wait, the
availability of
the rules for Enid,
a wonderfully witty card-game that can only be appreciated by
playing it.
Tuesday 17th December 2002
- Simplified and completed the Causes of Chaos
map.
(normal size,
small,
tiny,
microscopic
)
- Added a Causes of Chaos hints page, in both
clear
and
hidden
forms. (The questions are visible in the latter, but the
answers are set in white on a white background, so you need to
highlight them in order to see them.)
- Added a Causes of Chaos
trivia page.
- Added a simple utility program,
deb2targz,
to convert Debian Linux's .deb package files into the
nice, convenient .tar.gz tarballs that we all know
and love.
Thursday 12th December 2002
Wednesday 11th December 2002
- Added an area about my ancient Commodore 64 adventure game,
The Causes of Chaos,
including a pirated image that will run in emulators, maps and
solutions. More to come.
Thursday 5th December 2002
Tuesday 19th November 2002
Monday 18th November 2002
- Add the notes for next Sunday's sermon,
Do Not Worry
(from the sermon on the mount). Talk about getting it done in
plenty of time! This is almost unheard of ...
Saturday 27th October 2002
Tuesday 22nd October 2002
Thursday 3rd October 2002
Wednesday 25th September 2002
Tuesday 24th September 2002
- A few days ago, I added my notes for the recent bible study in
Romans 8:18-27,
but I forgot to announce it here. Until now.
Sunday 22nd September 2002
Sunday 15th September 2002
Monday 9th September 2002
Sunday 1st September 2002
- Our third son, Jonathan Jack ``J.J.'' Taylor, born in
the early hours of yesterday morning, now appears in
a photo with his brothers and
cousins (on my side).
Thursday 29th August 2002
Thursday 22nd August 2002
Thursday 8th August 2002
- Added a page dedicated to Slimo's third serial-terminal arcade
game,
Plughole,
based on the arcade game ``Block Hole'' apparently.
It's all there, including the
manual,
downloadable
source
and, for the terminally lazy/security-unconscious, a pre-built
Linux i386 binary.
(If you missed the first two parts in this trilogy, they are
Chicken Vomit
and
Fishmonger)
Tuesday 6th August 2002
- Added the up-to-date version of my notes for last-but-one
Sunday's message on
Grace and Works: what motivates
Christians?
(There's been an 80%-finished version lurking quietly on here
for a while, but I didn't want to announce it before it was
finished.)
Tuesday 23rd July 2002
- Semi-big changes. I moved all the music-related material out of
Miscellaneous area (which is
now a neat ``three Fs'' triumverate of Fiction, Football and
Food) and into
its own new area.
- Then I had somewhere to add the
Spirit of SSL reviews
which I've been meaning to add absolutely forever.
- Fixed a few broken links (e.g. The Annotated Lamb has
moved.)
- I actually added my
Romans 5,
notes a couple of weeks ago, but neglected to mention it in
this ``What's New'' list. So now I'm mentioning it.
Monday 15th July 2002
Thursday 23rd May 2002
Sunday 19th May 2002
- Added my notes for a bible-study in
Romans 1:1-3:20,
the first in a new series (so it also contains some overview
material.)
Friday 22nd March 2002
Tuesday 26th February 2002
Friday 15th February 2002
- Added some notes on Mtv Europe's extraordinary
contributions to the
ETA programming language, including not one but two
interpreters (one in Perl, one in Befunge) both of which are
bilingual - they double as valid ETA programs.
Thursday 31st January 2002
Tuesday 29th January 2002
Added not one, not two, but three new sermons! Yummy!
Friday 21st December 2001
Tuesday 11th December 2001
- Added my thoughts on
the future of publishing
as conventional roles change in the light of print-on-demand
and the internet.
Friday 7th December 2001
- Added
Video Nasty,
a piece about the horror of watching a video of a football
match that you couldn't watch as it was happening.
Friday 9th November 2001
- Added the new version of
my CV,
moving the summary of the old one
aside.
By the way, I notice that my website in its current form has just
celebrated its first birthday (the earliest entry in this What's
New? page is dated 8th November 2001.) And I still haven't got
around to putting the Enid rules up. Never mind: happy
birthday!
Thursday 25th October 2001
Things have been a bit quiet around here recently, because I've
mostly been working on my three Z39.50-related sites:
zoom.z3950.org,
zthes.z3950.org
and
perl.z3950.org.
However:
- Added the notes from a bible-study on
legalism
which I actually wrote back in July.
Tuesday 16th October 2001
Monday 15th October 2001
Monday 8th October 2001
Monday 1st October 2001
Thursday 27th September 2001
Monday 24th September 2001
(Looks like it's been two months since the last new material was
added to this site! But that's misleading: there is a lot of new
stuff in the
Dinosaur FAQ,
especially the
Classification section.)
Friday 24th July 2001
Tuesday 21st July 2001
(It's been a long while since the last update, because I've been
putting most of my spare time into
Herring - into the game
itself, that it, not the very embryonic web page about it.)
Wednesday 25th July 2001
Wednesday 18th July 2001
My, but it's been a long time since the last update!
Thursday 14th June 2001
- Added a page dedicated to Slimo's
Chicken Vomit
follow-up,
Fishmonger.
It's all there: screenshots, downloadable source and
binaries. What more is there to want in terms of flagrantly
inappropriate dumb-terminal ports of early-to-mid 1980s video
games? Deep down, I hope to win ``Stupid site of the day''
for this.
Wednesday 13th June 2001
- Added downloadable source and binaries to the
Chicken Vomit
page.
Tuesday 12th June 2001
- Added the
Island HELP
file to the MUNDI page, giving a flavour of one of its
more interesting successors.
Thursday 7th June 2001
- Added screenshots of
Marke ``The Chief Slime Monster'' Fincher's splendid game
Chicken Vomit
Wednesday 6th June 2001
Tuesday 5th June 2001
Monday 4th June 2001
Thursday 31st May 2001
Tuesday 29th May 2001
MUNDI-fest!
- Added a whole new MUNDI
section.
- Added a page of MUNDI downloads
including the complete source code.
- Moved some existing notes on MUNDI history from the existing
list
of my games into a new, dedicated
MUNDI history
page.
- Added some new material to the MUNDI history page.
Tuesday-Thursday 22nd-24th May 2001
Thursday 10th May 2001
Thursday 26th April 2001
Wednesday 25th April 2001
- Added
Pizza Restaurant DeathMatch, two
sets of head-to-head reviews of rival Pizza Restaurants in
Belsize Park. Possibly a contender for the hotly-contested
most-pointless-page-on-the-web title.
Thursday 19th April 2001
Thursday 5th April 2001
Wednesday 4th April 2001
- Added the second of the three foundational bible studies -
this one on God's grace
(but see next item.)
- Added the last of the three foundational bible studies -
this one on God's fatherhood.
(Both of these are substantially, but not completely,
finished. More material will go in soon, based on their
``test drives''.)
- Added a whole new section on the
adventure games
that I've written over the last couple of decades.
- Added a
list
of all those games, with some commentary and historical
background.
- Added
an ancient article
that I wrote back in 1987 about how to write adventure games
for home computers (but which turns out, on exhumation, to be
distressingly low on details.)
Thursday 29th March 2001
- In one of the most amazingly futile feats of software
engineering I've ever heard of, Steve Sykes has written an
interpreter for ETA on
the Palm Pilot. I was delighted to include it on my site!
Monday 26th March 2001
Friday 23rd March 2001
Wednesday 14th March 2001
- Added the first in what will
be a series of three
foundational bible studies on characteristics of God. This
one is about his sovereignty.
Friday 9th March 2001
Monday 26th February 2001
- Added a stolen picture of Robbie Fowler with the Worthington
Cup to the Miscellaneous page.
(Well, it doesn't really fit anywhere on the site, and I
couldn't resist putting it in somewhere.)
Friday 16th February 2001
Thursday 15th February 2001
- Minor tweaks to the home page, including
a new photo of me with Danny.
Monday 12th February 2001
- Added a page about
the Net::Z3950 Perl module
now that I've finally managed to release it (about seven
months after the first time I ``finished'' it).
- Updated the ZZPerl page to
describe both Net::Z3950 and YAZ's
Net::Z3950::SimpleServer.
Thursday 8th February 2001
- Renamed the ``Technical'' area of the web site to
Programming,
since some of the dinosaur stuff is also technical.
- Restructured the Computer index
page into Z39.50, Humour? and
Miscellaneous sections - it was getting unmanageable.
- Added The Empire Strikes Back, a
defence of Z39.50 against some strong (and unwarranted)
criticism from within the ZIG.
- Also added Just Say No, which makes
similar points in a somewhat more forthright manner. My
Opinion Only.
- The amazon links in the
Dinosaur FAQ's
book list
now include my affiliate-program identifier, so if anyone buys
the books that are listed, I'll get a slice :-)
Friday 2nd February 2001
Thursday 11th January 2001
Wednesday 13th December 2000
- Added a new image gallery,
Washington DC in Ten
Hours.
(There should be a nice bit of prose accompanying these
photos, but I haven't written it now; and who knows if I ever
will?)
Thursday 23rd November 2000
Wednesday 22nd November 2000
Monday 20th November 2000
- Added the first, skeletal version of
The Dinosaur FAQ.
This is an ongoing work-in-progress, and you are encouraged to
help
if you are so inclined!
Thursday 16th November 2000
Wednesday 15th November 2000
- Added a new image gallery,
Carnage on the Farm.
- For people who care about such things, I changed the way the
galleries are generated so that instead of going to the
full-size image itself, clicking on a thumbnail takes you to a
simple page with the image embedded; this means I can add
links to the page for stepping forward and backwards within
the gallery. (I added this feature because that's really how
you want to view Carnage.)
- Pruned all the expired references out of
my links page
and added some new ones.
- Tidied up some of the site's older text so that it more
accurately reflects the current state of the world.
Monday 13th November 2000
Friday 10th November 2000
Thursday 9th November 2000
Wednesday 8th November 2000
- This What's New? page comes into existence for the first
time. It's a part of a complete re-organisation of my site
into coherent areas which should make life easier for all my
visitors. (I really must take a look at those logs some time
...)
- The only new material is The
Annotated ``Knowing Me, Knowing You''
Still To Come ...
More to come RSN - I have plenty of fascinating material all lined
up and ready to deploy now that this site restructuring is done,
including:
- Much newer photos of Danny.
- An extended whinge about Microsoft.
- An introduction to Dave Barry.
- Some material about Bob the Angry Flower.
- The manual for The PIE Programming Language.
- Reviews of the best technical books ever written, and:
- A summary of the rules from
The Elements of Programming Style.
- An extract about commenting style, also from
The Elements of Programming Style.
- A list of Bumper-Sticker Computer Science maxims from
Programming Pearls.
- ``Silicon Valley Has Eaten Itself''.
- Awards that this site has won.
- Commentary on libb.a, the original Unix library.
